Ha! We just moved to Des Moines, and are planning to get chicks in the next week or so...Gotta love those chickenlaws! I'm hoping to start with 10, which should be enough to keep our family of 8 in eggs without (I hope) being totally overwhelming.

I'm enjoying your blog!

Hi Ed. I actually think the limit is a bit low, but three is not entirely unreasonable. You can get a lot of eggs from three chickens--enough for a small family to eat and share. Many larger cities that allow chickens, like Portland, Oregon, also have a three-chicken limit. That said, we've had four chickens in the past, and know people that keep up to six. The Chicken Police have never knocked. But chickens can get quite loud, and the more the louder--their voices really carry. Also, if you do get a complaining neighbor, it's good to be on solid legal ground. (I went around and talked to our neighbors before getting our new batch of chickens--everyone was pretty excited about it.) Plus I think we have to count our blessings--many cities don't allow chickens at all (such as Wilmington, Deleware and Providence, RI). Then there's Des Moines, Iowa--you can have 25 chickens on your first acre!

Hi Lyanda,

Great story. I've heard it said that there is no more eco-friendly source of food than keeping a few chickens and gathering their eggs. While I'm sure some would disagree with that statement, I'm buying it.

I know the city of Seattle limits Chicken ownership to three (or do I?)--I wonder if that cramps your style at all or is that a totally reasonable limitation considering we're all at living at close quarters here?

Happy chicken rearing,

Ed

One of my most frightening then - but hilarious now - memories of our first chicks was when our cat Caleb (HUGE Maine Coon Cat) somehow managed to sneak into the pantry and INTO the brooder (the type you are using) and sit in an opposing corner staring the girls down... Why I happened in there at just that moment I don't know - but hallelujah I did! Chicks spared! Phew! Nowadays, of course, the big girls are bigger than Caleb, and he just gives them a wide berth!

Used to live on Lake Sammamish right by Issaquah - great little town - with wonderful folks!
