Big Chicken, Little Chicken

A pick-me-up pic for a gray Seattle day:

Two Buff Orpingtons.  I love how Marigold looks entirely put out by the indignity of a chick standing on her back.

Yes, they can be ruthless–of course pecking is normal for awhile with any bird they don’t know, but can be dangerous for chicks. We are keeping the littles and bigs completely separate for now (unless supervised, and aside from photo opps!). Good luck. A little tube of topical antibiotic is an essential part of the chicken first aid kit.

      1. Yep- I’m still keeping them separate. They are about 12 weeks old now. I have reintroduced the pecked chick to her flockmates and that is going well for the most part. One of the older hens I let hang out with them. The older three though…only 1 at a time & supervised. They are the ‘mean girls.’ Fingers crossed!

  1. Great photo. I hadn’t seen that breed of chicken before. Very pretty. Here in France there are plenty of Sussex, Marans (which they call Coucou – cuckoo- here), Labels, Limousins and the awful Cou-Nu – Bare Necks. I have quite a mixture in my little flock.

TrishLester on June 18, 2007 If the saga of the 50-year-old car interests you, check out the title track from my new CD, Plymouth Belvedere, reeaesld just last month (country tune about an embarrassing old car). Can you relate? Please pass the word along, particularly to any radio stations in Oklahoma that should be playin’ the song. Google Trish Lester and you can hear the song and read lyrics on my music page. And, of course, the CD is for sale, too. Trish Lester, Singer/Songwriter, Santa Clarita, California

  2. I love this! What a wonderful photo and how lovely Orpingtons are. What a pretty color! I have 4 week old chicks now but they haven’t met my older flock–yet. I wonder how they will react when they finally do meet? Eek!
